DAVENPORT, Fla. – The University of Minnesota Morris baseball team fought back from a large early deficit, but couldn't overcome a 7-run hole after the second inning in an 8-5 loss to the Concordia University (Chicago).
Minnesota Morris had a chance to take the lead in the top of the first, but Concordia (Chicago) escaped a bases-loaded jam.
Joey Reinarts struck out the side in the bottom of the first, but then ran into trouble in the second inning. Concordia (Chicago) had seven hits to go along with a Minnesota Morris error in the inning to plate seven home. Christian Jacob had the big blow in the inning with a three-run homer.
With the bases loaded again for Minnesota Morris in the top of the fourth, a two-out single from
David Steffen plus an error on the play from the Concordia (Chicago) outfielder allowed
Tyler Scheler and
Keegan Jonas to score. In the next frame,
Ethan Schmitz led off with a triple and came home on a RBI groundout from
Ty Beasley to cut it to 7-3.
Concordia (Chicago) added onto its lead with a RBI double from Michael Kasik in the bottom of the sixth to increase its lead back to five, 8-3. The Cougars answered back thanks in part to a Concordia (Chicago) error in the top of the seventh. Steffen reached on an error to lead off the inning, then stole second and moved to third on an
Alex Baumann single. Schmitz drove Steffen in with a groundout, making it 8-4 heading to the stretch.
The game moved quickly through the late innings. In the top of the ninth,
Alex Goedhard started the inning with a double.
Cooper Cicirello then pinch-ran and moved to third with one out. A sacrifice fly from Steffen got Minnesota Morris one run closer, but an out from the next hitter in the lineup ended the game.
Reinarts took the loss on the mound for the Cougars to fall to 1-1 on the season.
Owen Dylong,
Elias Harrington, and Steffen all made scoreless appearances in relief.
Following a day off tomorrow, Minnesota Morris will face Farmingdale State College in a doubleheader beginning at 3:30 p.m. (EDT) on Monday afternoon in Auburndale, Fla.
