Baseball Completes Sweep of North Central

Ben Meuser was 5-for-5 with five RBIs, including a pair of home runs in a 14-3 Cougar victory on Tuesday night.

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Morris baseball team completed a sweep of North Central University under the lights at the University of Northwestern on Tuesday night, defeating the Rams, 14-3, in seven innings. The win improves the Cougars to 9-12 (4-2 UMAC) on the season.

Minnesota Morris scored in each of the first four innings to sprint out to a 9-0 lead. The Cougars used the long ball in the first inning, taking a 2-0 lead on a homer from Ty Beasley that drove in Alex Baumann. Ben Meuser followed with a solo shot to make it 3-0.

Alex Goedhard led off the second with a single before stealing second. With two down, David Steffen singled him in to increase the margin to 4-0. Meuser and Evan Benson added RBI singles in the third to up the lead to 6-0. In the top of the fourth, a North Central error kept the inning going, with Ethan Schmitz scoring on the defensive mishap before a Meuser RBI double and another Benson RBI single.

Daniel Montana had a two-run homer in the bottom of the fourth to get North Central on the board and the Rams added another run in the fifth to make it 9-3. Minnesota Morris got back to it in the sixth inning, plating five runs to go on top by 11 runs and open up the possibility of a run-rule victory. After Schmitz reached on a North Central error, Meuser's second home run of the game made it 11-3. RBI singles later in the inning came off the bats of Ben Leal, Steffen, and Baumann.

After Elias Harrington left the game after 5.0 innings of work, the bullpen shut things down to end the game after seven innings. North Central managed one hit off of Breckin Silvain in the sixth but got nothing out of it. Nolan Satre worked a 1-2-3 seventh inning to finish the game off.

Harrington got the win for the Cougars to move to 1-1 on the season. Meuser was 5-for-5 with five RBIs and four runs scored on the night. Steffen, Beasley, and Benson all had two hits and two RBIs in the game as well.

Next up for Minnesota Morris is a weekend series with the University of Wisconsin-Superior. Though scheduled for Morris, the final details of the times and locations for the games have not yet been finalized.
