Women’s Tennis Challenges UMAC Leaders

The Cougars lost a 7-2 decision to Northwestern on Tuesday in a match that was close to going very differently.

MORRIS, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Morris fell by a score of 7-2 to the University of Northwestern on Tuesday. The Cougars were competitive in nearly every match and had chances to take sets that could have turned the outcome of the match, however the Eagles were able to secure most of the points and maintain their perfect UMAC record. Minnesota Morris falls to 5-5 (4-2 UMAC) with the loss.

Northwestern took two of the three doubles matches to nab an early lead. Kiley Rodarmel and Allison Bruhn fell by a score of 8-4 at No. 1 doubles, while the No. 3 team of Megan Arens and Marybeth Tautges lost an 8-2 decision. At No. 2 doubles, Abby Burquest and Valerie Gall put a point on the board for the Cougars with an 8-7(6) win.

In singles play, Bruhn ended with the lone win in the six matches for Minnesota Morris. At No. 3 singles, Bruhn defeated Abby Johnson by a score of 5-7, 6-4, 10-8. Another match that required a third-set tiebreaker went Northwestern's way as Megan Arens lost to Elise Jarchow, 6-3, 3-6, 6-10.

In the remaining singles matches, Rodarmel lost to Annie Orvis at No. 1 singles, 6-7(4), 3-6. Burquest fell to Domiano Baideme, 4-6, 1-6. At No. 4 singles, Gall lost the first set to Taylar Smith, 6-7(4) before retiring due to injury. Analise Marquardt provided UNW with its last point with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Tautges. 

Minnesota Morris is back at it tomorrow morning with a 9 a.m. match against Crown College at the Morris Tennis Courts.
