MORRIS, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Morris women's tennis team booked a spot in the UMAC Tournament on Tuesday afternoon by defeating the University of Wisconsin-Superior, 5-2, in a play-in match. The Cougars and Yellowjackets both went 7-3 in UMAC play on the season and had split their earlier head-to-head matchups, necessitating a winner-take-all match between the programs. The win for the Cougars improves the team to 9-6 on the season.
In doubles play, UW-Superior rallied at both No. 1 and No. 3 for 8-6 wins that put the Yellowjackets ahead. The damage could have been worse if not for a dramatic 8-7(6) win for
Abby Burquest and
Valerie Gall at No. 2 doubles.
The Cougars turned the match around in singles, taking all four of the completed matches to clinch the win.
Megan Arens started the comeback with a 6-3, 6-3 victory at No. 5 singles that knotted the score at 2-2.
Allison Bruhn won just moments later at No. 3 singles, 6-2, 7-5. Burquest continued the momentum for Minnesota Morris with a 6-3, 7-6(3) win at No. 2 to put the Cougars within a point of the win. Gall clinched it at No. 4 with a come-from-behind 2-6, 6-2, 6-1 triumph.
With the win in hand, matches for
Kiley Rodarmel (No. 1) and
Ava Weber (No. 6) were left unfinished.
Minnesota Morris will be the No. 2 seed out of the UMAC North Division and will face Principia College – the No. 1 seed from the UMAC South Division – in a semifinal on Friday at 6:30 p.m. at the Baseline Tennis Center in Minneapolis. The other semifinal features North Division No. 1 seed University of Northwestern facing South Division No. 2 seed Webster University.
