MORRIS, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Morris volleyball team ran its record to 10-4 (3-0 UMAC) with a 3-1 victory (25-22, 21-25, 25-20, 25-18) over the University of Wisconsin-Superior on Saturday, knocking the Yellowjackets from the ranks of the unbeaten in UMAC play in the process.
Making plays late in each set was what set Minnesota Morris apart on Saturday and it began in the opening set. Trailing 21-19, the Cougars scored six of the final points to take a 1-0 lead on the visitors. In that late surge,
Tori Scheler and
Lydia Nash each had two kills while combining for a block on another Cougar point to help take the early edge.
The Yellowjackets returned the favor in the second set by scoring seven of the final eight points, erasing a 20-18 Minnesota Morris lead. The lone Cougar point down the stretch in the second set came off a UW-Superior service error while a pair of errors from Minnesota Morris as well as three aces helped the Yellowjackets knot the score at 1-1.
Minnesota Morris was undeterred and put together a solid third set in which there was only one tie and the Cougars never trailed. Two kills from Nash and a block from Nash and
Maggie Jones gave UMN Morris a quick 4-1 lead.
Laura Wellbrock and
Lacie O'Leary each notched two kills in the final stages of the set to finish it off for a 2-1 advantage.
A pair of four-point runs from the Cougars early in the fourth set helped stake them to a 14-8 cushion. UW-Superior would rally within one point on multiple occasions, but the Yellowjackets could never pull all the way even. With Minnesota Morris out in front, 19-17, the Cougars scored six of the final seven points to finish off the victory in style. Scheler was once again heavily involved with two kills and a solo block.
Nash finished with a team-high 16 kills and a .325 hitting percentage on the afternoon. Wellbrock added nine kills, while Scheler and O'Leary each had eight.
McKenzie Newton put together an impressive stat line of six kills, 42 assists and 12 digs.
Ava Brunn finished with 17 digs, with Wellbrock and
Sydney Eckhoff each adding 12 of their own.
Minnesota Morris will now face down a gauntlet of seven straight road matches, beginning on Sept. 29 with a trip to Bethany Lutheran College in Mankato for a 7 p.m. start.
