Volleyball Sweeps Season Series with Carleton

The Cougars took the Knights down in three sets for the second weekend running on Friday afternoon.

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Morris volleyball team ran its record to 4-2 on Friday after notching a second sweep of Carleton College (25-18, 25-20, 25-22) in the opening match of the Macalester Invitational.

The only time Minnesota Morris trailed in the first set was at 2-1. Laura Wellbrock and Maggie Jones had kills as part of a six-point run for the Cougars to go up 7-2 and they never looked back in grabbing the 1-0 lead.

With Carleton ahead, 13-11, midway through the second set, Minnesota Morris scored eight unanswered to help go up, 2-0. Jones had two kills in that stretch, while the Knights committed attack errors and continuously gave the Cougars free points with service errors.

Tied 14-14 in the third set, Minnesota Morris reeled off four straight with kills from McKenzie Newton, Tori Scheler, and a pair from Wellbrock to take a four-point lead. Carleton twice pulled within a point, including at 23-22, before Lydia Nash and Anna Molstad ended the match with kills for the Cougars.

Minnesota Morris had a solid .255 hitting percentage as a team. Molstad led the Cougars with eight kills and Jones had seven. Scheler's .444 hitting percentage led UMN Morris in the match. Wellbrock had five kills, three aces, and 11 digs, while Ava Brunn totaled 13 digs. Newton finished with 25 assists.

Play continues tomorrow for Minnesota Morris with an 11 a.m. match against Buena Vista University and a 1 p.m. contest with Grinnell College.
