MORRIS, Minn. - The University of Minnesota Morris Cougar Volleyball team hosted the University of Northwestern Eagles on James Gremmels Court. The Cougars leave the day 5-2 in UMAC play and 9-9 overall on the season.Â
The Cougars opened the scoring in the first set, but Northwestern was quick to respond and score points of their own. Scoring went back and forth for the two teams, before the Cougars went on a scoring run that gave them five points and allowed them to take an 18-15 lead. The scoring run featured kills from Clara Holden, Anna Molstad, and Tori Scheler assisted by Sydney Petersen, Ava Brunn, and Holden respectively. The game tied up at 20-20, and the Cougars earned another three points to take a late lead. The Eagles sparked a scoring run of their own that resulted in the end of the set with Northwestern leading the Cougars.
Once again, Minnesota Morris opened up the scoring, and stayed in the lead until the Eagles tied the game up at 10-10. Scoring continued to go back and forth for these two competitive teams. Tied at 13-13, Molstad threw down a kill and Madeline Monaco and Mary Cate Ziembiec blocked an attack as part of the four point run that gave the Cougars a lead. Kills from Scheler and Ziembiec put the Cougars up 23-20 late in the set, but the Eagles responded with a devastating five-point run to wrap up the set 25-23 over Minnesota Morris.Â
The Cougars dominated the third set of the match, getting up early on the Eagles. A six-point run featuring kills from Molstand, Lacie O'Leary, and Madeline Monaco gave the Cougars a substantial 13-8 lead. The home team took advantage of their momentum, laying down several kills from Ziembiec as well as one from Scheler and Petersen respectively to string together scoring runs. The set, finalized by a kill from Ziembiec assisted by Allison Dornseif, came to a close with Minnesota Morris up 25-14 over Northwestern.Â
The Eagles scored the first points of the fourth set, but the Cougars answered back and scored five of their own in a run that was kicked off by a kill from O'Leary. The set remained competitive on both sides of the court, with Northwestern getting up 14-9 and the Cougars fighting back to bring the set as close as 21-22. The Eagles finished the set off with three kills that the Minnesota Morris defense were unable to defend, retiring the set at 25-22 and ending the competitive match.Â
Scheler led the Cougar's offense, throwing down nine kills on the day. Wellbrock, Petersen, and Ziembiec all served up two aces. Molstad and Scheler made four blocks each. Petersen set up fifteen kills to earn fifteen set assists on the day. Wellbrock and Melanie Monaco popped up ten digs each for Minnesota Morris.Â
The Cougars will take on Concordia College Oct. 19 on James Gremmels Court. The matchup is scheduled for an 11 am start.Â
