Cobbers Spoil Women’s Basketball Home-Opener

MORRIS, Minn. - The University of Minnesota Morris Women's Basketball team took on the Concordia College - Moorhead Cobbers on James Gremmels Court for their first home matchup of the season. The Cougars came away from the tough loss with a 0-3 overall record on the season.

The Cobbers took a quick 10-4 lead in the first quarter of this matchup. Minnesota Morris was quick to respond with a jumper from Maddy Grove and an outside shot from Itzel Salazar to jump up to 9-10. Claire Stark made a strong move in the post and a put-back shot from Katelyn Lindberg tied the score up at 13-13. A 9-2 run for the Concordia-Moorhead posted a 22-15 score. Three shots from Salazar at the charity strip was what closed the gap for the Cougars at 18-22. The first quarter ended with a competitive score of 24-18 in favor of the Cobbers.

Stark kicked off the second half with two shots from the line, which Grove followed up with five points of her own. Concordia-Moorhead continued to hold on to their lead, but the Cougars brought it close (30-34) halfway through the quarter with a three-pointer from Savanna Pelzer. Despite a tough battle from Minnesota Morris, the Cobbers held a twelve point lead heading into halftime.

A three-pointer from Grace Perry less than a minute into the third quarter, followed up by a free throw from Shelby Mortenson, closed the Cougar's deficit to seven points. Unfortunately, this would be the closest score Minnesota Morris would maintain for the remainder of the game. Concordia-Moorhead found a fourteen point lead with 2:50 left in the quarter. The Cougars held the Cobbers to two points to finish the third quarter, but only managed to post three of their own, ending the quarter with a score of 51-64.

Minnesota Morris lost steam early in the fourth quarter, only posting six points to Concordia-Moorhead's nineteen. Scoring for the Cougars didn't come until almost halfway through the quarter. Grove went 1 for 1 at the line off a shooting foul. Pelzer drove into the lane with just under five minutes left to secure two more points for Minnesota Morris. Stark responded to the Cobbers next points with a post move in the paint to maintain the nineteen point gap. The final points for the Cougars in the quarter came from a free throw off the hands of Reece Wassink. The Cobbers closed out the game with a 83-57 lead over the Cougars.

Grove racked up eighteen points on the night, going 3-3 from the arc. She also earned two rebounds and two steals. Stark totaled up twelve points of her own while shooting 100% from the free-throw line. She came away from the game with six rebounds and a steal. Pelzer dropped seven points in her first showing on James Gremmels Court, in addition to two steals.

The Cougars will head on the road for a 2 pm matchup against Dakota State University Nov. 16.
