Women’s Soccer Rallies Twice to Tie Bethany Lutheran in Season Finale

Goals from Greta Keffer and Chantel Peralta in the second half earned a 2-2 draw for the Cougars against Bethany Lutheran.

MORRIS, Minn. - The University of Minnesota Morris women's soccer team put up a spirited effort in the second half to tie Bethany Lutheran College on Saturday, 2-2. Trailing twice in the match, the Cougars scored quickly after halftime and again in the final eight minutes to pick up a point from the second-place team in the final UMAC regular season standings.

Both goalkeepers were kept busy in the first 20 minutes of action, but it was Bethany Lutheran who found the breakthrough in the 23rd minute on a long solo run from Mia Johnson following a pass through the midfield from Olaitz Muguruza. That 1-0 lead from the Vikings lasted to the break, with Danielle Reinhard ultimately making six saves in the first half to keep the Cougars in it.

The opening minutes of the second half were all Minnesota Morris. Johnette Nagbe uncorked a shot one minute into the half that was saved, then was back at it a minute later with a second shot on goal. This one was saved again by Ema Cortes Carvalho, but Greta Keffer was there on the rebound, controlling it calmly and sweeping it home to knot the score at 1-1.

Bethany Lutheran piled on the pressure from there, but the Vikings were held in check on a series of offside calls. Of the 11 offside calls on BLC in the match, eight came after halftime and negated a number of chances. Bethany Lutheran was finally able to hold its run and take a 2-1 lead in the 64th minute on Muguruza's second assist of the afternoon, this time to Elena Lujan Rubio.

Bella Toth forced a pair of saves as the half ticked on, but her play down the wing rather than in front of goal proved to be the difference in the end. Tearing down the right flank multiple times in the closing minutes, Toth delivered an inch-perfect cross to Chantel Peralta to nod home in the 83rd minute, leveling the score at 2-2. The last best chance for Bethany Lutheran came in the 87th minute, but a Cougar defender blocked a potential game-winning goal off the line to keep the teams even.

Toth finished the day with five shots (three on goal), while Nagbe had four shots (three on goal). Reinhard ended with nine saves in the match.

In the first season under Emma Morris, the Cougars finish the 2024 campaign with a record of 2-11-3 (2-7-3 UMAC).
