Women’s Tennis Drops a 5-2 Decision to Mount Marty

The Cougars came close to a point in doubles before the Lancers won the top four singles matches on Sunday.

YANKTON, S.D. – The University of Minnesota Morris women's tennis team fell to Mount Marty University, 5-2, on Sunday afternoon.

Mount Marty did not field a No. 3 doubles team, but took narrow decisions at No. 1 (6-3 over Allison Bruhn and Kiley Rodarmel) and No. 2 (7-5 over Katharine Kelm and Kristen Muller) to take a 1-0 lead.

Without players at Nos. 5 and 6, Mount Marty gifted Minnesota Morris a pair of points by default in singles. However, the Lancers were able to overcome playing short-handed by taking the remaining four singles matches. At No. 1, Valerie Gall lost to Suri Gomez, 1-6, 2-6. Marybeth Tautges likewise dropped a 1-6, 2-6 decision at No. 2 against Alexandria Salazar. Kelm was handed a 2-6, 0-6 defeat in the No. 3 match. At No. 4, Ava Weber forced a third-set tiebreak before falling, 2-6, 7-5, 3-10.

Minnesota Morris continues non-conference play on Feb. 17 with a 2 p.m. match in Sioux City, Iowa against Morningside University.
