MORRIS, Minn. - The University of Minnesota Morris baseball team came away with a win in the first game of its series against the Martin Luther College Knights. With the wind blowing into the plate, this game was lower scoring than last weekend at Chizek Field but the Cougars broke away in the middle innings for a 13-5 win. With this win the Cougars move to 10-12 (5-2 UMAC) heading into the second day of games this weekend.
The bats for both the Cougars and the Knights got hot in the second inning, with Martin Luther knocking in two runs in the top half before
Parker Gilchrist (3-0) ended the inning with a strikeout. UMN Morris answered back with four runs of its own in quick succession in the bottom of the second. The first Cougar run came from
Logan Straumann, followed by runs from
Owen Dylong and
Landen Meyerdirk off a single from
Ben Meuser.
James Nelson also crossed the plate in the second from a
Ryan McGie RBI.
The score was 4-4 heading into the fourth before Gilchrist pitched a 1-2-3 inning with the help of his teammates. This set the Cougars up to take control of the game in the bottom of the fourth. UMN Morris brought in four more runs, starting off with a long single from McGie that brought Nelson in. Meuser scored a run of his own off a
Ty Beasley RBI, followed by a score from McGie after Straumann sent a sacrifice fly to center field. The Cougars finished their scoring frenzy with a run from
Ethan Schmitz to put them up, 8-4, heading into the fifth.
Another three at-bat inning from Martin Luther kept the Cougars at a comfortable distance heading into the bottom of the fifth, where Meuser and McGie both earned their second runs of the day and Straumann picked up another RBI.
The Knights scored their last run of the day in the top of the seventh, getting the score up to 10-5 heading into the eighth inning of play. The last three runs came for UMN Morris in the bottom of the eighth from
Ashton Pauly, Nelson, and McGie to solidify the Cougar lead.
Gilchrist struck out six Martin Luther batters in 6.0 innings of work and allowed only two earned runs.
Trevor Mong came on in relief and threw the final 3.0 innings, picking up his first save of the season while striking out three. At the plate for Minnesota Morris, McGie finished 4-for-4 with two walks, driving in three and scoring three times. Schmitz added a 3-for-6 day at the plate, while Nelson, Meuser, Straumann, and Meyerdirk all had two hits each.
The Cougars will take on Martin Luther again tomorrow in a doubleheader to finish off the series. Game one of the day is scheduled to start at 2:00PM.
