Northwestern Defeats Women’s Tennis in Home Finale

The Cougars finally made their season debut at the Morris Tennis Courts on Thursday, but were swept by the Eagles.

MORRIS, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Morris women's tennis team made both its home debut and finale on Thursday, but fell to visiting University of Northwestern by a score of 9-0. The Cougars drop to 3-10 (2-2 UMAC North) with the loss.

A number of matches were closely contested, but Northwestern was able to secure all the points, beginning with a tight 8-6 win at No. 1 doubles over the Cougar duo of Kiley Rodarmel and Allison Bruhn. The Eagles also posted 8-2 wins in the Nos. 2 and 3 matches over the Minnesota Morris teams of Valerie Gall and Marybeth Tautges at No. 2 and Mariah Mireles and Katharine Kelm at No. 3.

All six singles matches were won by Northwestern in straight sets, but Minnesota Morris stayed right with the opposition in many of them. At No. 1, Rodarmel fell to Annie Orvis, 4-6, 1-6. Gall was even closer at No. 2, coming up just short in a 6-7(0), 6-7(1) loss to Abby Johnson. In the No. 3 match, Bruhn fell to Elise Jarchow, 4-6, 3-6.

In the remaining three matches, Kelm lost at No. 4 to Ana Marquardt, 1-6, 2-6. At No. 5, Tautges suffered a 4-6, 4-6 defeat to Aby Ross. Finally, at No. 6, Kristen Muller lost to Rayna Baumgarn, 0-6, 0-6.

Minnesota Morris heads to the University of Wisconsin-Superior on Saturday to face the Yellowjackets at 2 p.m.
