Long-ball Carries Northland Past Cougar Baseball in Series Opener

The LumberJacks jacked four home runs on Friday, including two from Vinny Troccoli in a 15-11 win.

MORRIS, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Morris baseball team lost a barnburner to Northland College in the home opener on Friday afternoon, giving up four home runs in a 15-11 loss to the LumberJacks. The defeat puts the Cougars at 7-11 overall and 2-2 in the UMAC on the year.

It was Vinny Troccoli's day for Northland, picking up the win on the mound and also homering twice and finishing with eight runs batted in. Things started in the top of the second with a grand slam that put the LumberJacks on top, 4-0. Minnesota Morris was able to turn things around in the bottom of the inning, however, stringing together six hits that included RBI singles from Blake Imhoff and Ashton Pauly before a towering three-run homer from Ben Meuser put the Cougars ahead, 5-4.

An RBI groundout in the top of the fourth for Northland tied things up at 5-5 before Landen Meyerdirk again put Minnesota Morris in front with a solo shot to make it 6-5 after five innings of play.

The game began to turn in the sixth. Troccoli's second home run of the game was a three-run blast that made it 8-6. Minnesota Morris had one more response, pulling to within one on a RBI single from Ty Beasley before retaking a 9-8 advantage on a Ryan McGie double that brought Beasley and Ethan Schmitz home.

Cougar pitching simply didn't have an answer for the Northland offense as the game continued on, however. The LumberJacks scored three more in the seventh to go up, 11-9, then extended that lead in the eighth with a three-run home run from Tyler Murphy that made it 14-9.

Minnesota Morris continued to battle but were quickly running out of outs. Keegan Jonas brought the Cougars one run closer in the bottom of the eighth on a RBI groundout that made it 14-10 heading into the ninth. The final frame saw Northland extend the lead with a solo home run from Kazdion Mount. Down by five, UMN Morris loaded the bases with no one out in the bottom of the ninth, but all the Cougars could manage from there was a sac fly from Schmitz to leave it at 15-11.

James Nelson and McGie each collected three hits in the game for Minnesota Morris. Meuser led the Cougars with three RBIs on the day, going 1-for-2 at the plate and walking four times.

Minnesota Morris will try to turn things around and take the series tomorrow with a doubleheader at Chizek Field starting at 2 p.m.
