Valiant Effort Ends in Defeat: Minnesota Morris Football Faces Tough Loss in 7-28 Matchup

MORRIS, Minn. - The University of Minnesota Morris Football team traveled to take on Carleton College. The Cougars battled hard, but were unable to match the Knights for points on the day.

Minnesota Morris opened the scoring for the day halfway through the first quarter. In a drive that started at 7:46 from the UMM 47, Izayah Boss rushed for 49 yards down the middle in a play that resulted in a Cougar touchdown. Logan Ahlers' kick attempt was good, giving Minnesota Morris a 7-0 lead over the Knights. Carleton was quick to answer back with a drive that took two minutes off the clock and ended in a touchdown for the Knights that evened up the score. The rest of the quarter remained scoreless for both teams.

Pressure from the Cougar defense stopped Carleton short on their first drive of the second quarter. JT Cook had a clutch pass break-up to stop a touchdown for the Knights. Chayce Meyer and Arian Saenz went in together on a QB sack for a loss of six yards. Forced to kick, the field goal attempt for the Carleton was no good and the Cougars took possession. Carleton College's second scoring drive began at 4:43 from the UMM 3. The Knights connected on a short pass three yards from the end zone and put the kick through the uprights for a 14-7 lead. Minnesota Morris launched another scoring campaign that was unsuccessful, and the half retired with Carleton up 14-7.

The third quarter began with a drive from Carleton that ended abruptly with an interception from JT Cook who returned the ball for thirteen yards. Unfortunately, the Cougars were unable to capitalize on this, and paid for it when the Knights scored on their next drive from a long pass to the UMM 2. Up 21-7, Carleton's defense carried that momentum with them, putting a stop to Minnesota Morris' offensive attempts and applying pressure all over the field.

Carleton put the game away for good in their second drive of the fourth quarter. A 28 yard pass into the end zone and an extra point kick put the Knights in a 28-7 lead. The Cougars continued to battle for a score, but the offense was unsuccessful in their attempts. The game retired with Carleton up 28-7 over Minnesota Morris.

Hayden Charboneau led the Cougars in passing yards with fifty in eight completed passes. Boss rushed for 100 yards on the day and scored the lone touchdown while also catching the ball for eighteen yards. Ethan Tang hauled in two passes for seventeen yards.

Alex Emmrich led the Cougars with ten tackles. Cook totaled up nine tackles and tacked on two interceptions and a pass break-up. Saenz earned seven tackles with 0.5 sacks for a loss of three yards. Tayven Penninger took six tackles and two pass break-ups for the Cougars.

Minnesota Morris will play again on Oct. 5 at 1 pm at Martin Luther. This will serve as the UMAC opener for Cougar Football.
