ASHLAND, Minn. - The University of Minnesota Morris Cougars hit the road to take on the Northland College Lumberjacks. The Cougars came away from the day with a 2-0 sweep thanks to goals from Whitaker Root and Aaron Mackall.
The first half brought shots from both teams with no scoring. The Cougar's first shot came from Brett Bartkowicz less than a minute into the game. Northland responded with two shots on their own a few minutes later. Mackall made his first scoring attempt in the eighth minute. Eight more shots came from Minnesota Morris in the first half, but the team was unable to find the back of the net. The half retired with the teams tied up at 0-0.
Goals from the Cougars came back-to-back early in the second half. In the 50th minute of play, Root launched a shot past the Lumberjack's goalie into the corner. Root was assisted by Mackall for the goal. The second goal of the game came in the 53rd minute from Mackall. His goal was assisted by Andreas Garcia for a one-touch shot that went past the Northland goalie. The Cougars continued to rush the Northland College defense, firing shots at the net. Both teams were unable to score again in the second half, resulting in a 2-0 final score in favor of Minnesota Morris.
Mackall finished the match with five shots, one goal, and one assist for the Cougars. Bartkowicz had four shots on the day in just 52 minutes of play for Minnesota Morris. Cooper Jones and Brayden Rock took two shots on goal each. Garcia played fifteen minutes for the Cougars and dropped one goal on the net in that time. Nick Issensee made five saves to assist in the sweep for Minnesota Morris.
The Cougars' win puts them at 2-2 in conference play. They will take the field again on Oct. 2 against North Central University. The game is scheduled for a 4:30 kick-off.
