Cougar Volleyball Battles Hard in Tough 0-3 Defeat

SUPERIOR, Wis. - The University of Minnesota Morris Volleyball team battled it out with the University of Wisconsin Yellowjackets in a repeat of last year's UMAC semi-final match up.

The Cougars opened up the scoring in the first set due to errors from UW-Superior. Mary Cate Ziembiec threw down a kill to give Minnesota Morris a two point lead, and a third Yellowjacket error awarded the Cougars their fourth point. A six point scoring run from UW-Superior was what gave the home team a 8-5 lead. The Cougars were able to keep the score within a few points thanks to kills from O'Leary and Ziembiec as well as errors from the Yellowjackets. Minnesota Morris was unable to hang on to UW-Superior as the set went on and the Yellowjackets led 25-15 at the end.

UW-Superior showed their offensive skills in the second set, getting up 10-2 on the Cougars and keeping their foot on the gas until the last point. The Cougars totaled up ten kills in the set, and were led on the offensive by Ziembiec and Laura Wellbrock with two kills apiece. This effort was not enough to stop the Yellowjackets, and the set retired with the home team up 25-15.

Minnesota Morris kept the score close in the beginning of the third set. Kills from Tori Scheler, O'Leary, and Wellbrock assisted the Cougars in staying within striking distance of the Yellowjackets. A block from Scheler and Ziembiec tied up the game 11-11. A kill from O'Leary followed by a block from Madeline Monaco and O'Leary gave the Cougars their only lead of the set at 14-13. UW-Superior launched a six point offensive run that gave them their first big lead of the set at five point. From there, the Yellowjackets put the set away at 25-18.

Wellbrock and Ziembiec led the Cougars with six kills apiece. Petersen assisted in eight kills and totaled up eleven digs on the day for Minnesota Morris.

The Cougars return home on Oct. 4 to take on Bethany Lutheran College in a 7 pm match up.
