MORRIS, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Morris men's soccer team battled to a 1-1 draw with the University of Northwestern in Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) play Wednesday afternoon in Morris, Minn. First-year student
Jake Anargyros netted the goal for the Cougars.
Â
With the result, Minnesota Morris moves to 3-5-2 overall and 1-2-1 in UMAC play. The Eagles also stand at 3-4-1 overall and 1-2-1 in the conference.
"I'm happy with the teams work rate," said head coach
Blake Ordell. "I'm glad we got the point so we are in the playoff hunt, but it's disappointing to miss out on the three points when we were leading with seven minutes to go."
Â
Aaron Mackall nearly put the Cougars on the board in the fourth minute, but the Northwestern goalkeeper managed to send the ball over the bar. The Eagles registered their first shot on target eight minutes later, which was saved by
Nick Isensee. The first half remained scoreless, with UNW holding a 6-2 edge in shots.
Â
Northwestern started the second half aggressively, but their early attempts were either blocked by the Cougar defense or missed the target. The first shot on goal of the half came in the 58th minute from Mackall, but it was saved.
Â
In the final 10 minutes, Mackall played a through ball that split the defense and found Anargyros. The first-year forward took it to goal and scored the opener. The Eagles responded just two minutes later. On their ninth corner kick of the game, the ball found Jay'ce Jones, who leveled the match at 1-1.
Â
Anargyros scored his fourth goal of the season, while Mackall tallied his second assist. The Cougars recorded six shots on goal, with Mackall leading the team with two.
Cade Simonson,
Chann Piseth,
Justin Page, and Anargyros each added one shot on goal. In net, Isensee made seven saves.
