Three-Goal First Half Lifts Eagles over Cougars

MORRIS, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Morris women's soccer team fell 3-0 to the University of Northwestern in Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) play Wednesday evening in Morris, Minn.

The Eagles improved to 3-4-2 overall and 2-1-1 in the UMAC. The Cougars dropped to 1-8-2 overall and 0-3-1 in conference play.

Northwestern recorded the first shot of the match in the sixth minute, but CJ Frear-Boerner was there to make the save. Bella Toth and Rourke Nebel each had a chance for the Cougars, but both missed the target. Fifteen minutes in, the Eagles opened the scoring. On the other end, Caitlin Lau took a shot but pushed it wide. Ashlynn Pollreisz recorded Minnesota Morris's first shot on goal, but it was stopped by the keeper. Northwestern found the back of the net two more times before halftime to take a 3-0 lead into the break.

The Cougars delivered a strong defensive performance in the second half, keeping the Eagles off the scoreboard. Frear-Boerner made six saves in the final 45 minutes to preserve the scoreline.

In the final two minutes of the match, a handball in the box awarded Minnesota Morris a penalty kick. In her first game back in two years, Malia Totoris stepped up to take it, but the Northwestern goalkeeper guessed correctly and made the save, sealing the 3-0 result.

The Cougars totaled four shots on goal, with Pollreisz registering three and Totoris adding the other. Frear-Boerner finished with 13 saves in the contest.

Minnesota Morris returns to action on Saturday, October 4, against North Central University at 2:30 p.m. at Cougar Field.
