Men’s Soccer Fight for a Playoff Spot in Final Week of the Season

MORRIS, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Morris men's soccer team enters the final week of the regular season looking to secure a playoff spot. The final week of Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) play begins Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. against North Central University and wraps up Saturday with a 3:30 p.m. match at the University of Northwestern.

Last week, Minnesota Morris faced the top two teams in the UMAC— the University of Wisconsin–Superior and Bethany Lutheran College—falling 4-0 in both matches. A bright spot came when goalkeeper Nick Isensee set a program record for career saves after making eight stops against Bethany Lutheran. The Cougars currently sit in fifth place in the conference with 11 points, just behind Northwestern (14 points) and Crown College (13 points).
 
Aaron Mackall leads the UMAC with 16 goals this season, ranking fourth in NCAA Division III. Mackall has been named UMAC Offensive Player of the Week five times— the most in conference history— and has scored in eight games, including a program-record four goals at Martin Luther College. Jake Anargyros follows with eight goals, ranking fifth in the conference, and has assisted on five goals. Whitaker Root is tied with Anargyros for the team lead in assists with five. In goal, Isensee has made 98 saves and ranks third in the conference with a .706 save percentage.
 
North Central holds an overall record of 3-13-1 and is 2-7-1 in UMAC play. Last week, the Rams dropped both contests—falling 5-2 to Cornell College in a nonconference match and 1-0 to Bethany Lutheran. NCU has scored 22 goals this season, led by Santiago Grams with four, followed by Ricardo Vera Martinez with three goals and six assists.
 
In their first meeting this season, the Rams and Cougars played to a 1-1 draw, with Anargyros scoring for UMM on a penalty kick. Overall, Minnesota Morris leads the series 16-6-2.
 
Northwestern sits third in the UMAC with a 4-4-2 conference record and a 6-6-2 overall mark. The Eagles split their matches last week, falling 4-0 to Bethany Lutheran before defeating Martin Luther 5-2. Jared Mojardin leads UNW with nine goals and four assists for 22 points, while Jay'ce Jones follows with six goals. In net, Hayden DeAnnuntis has started all 14 games for the Eagles, recording 39 saves.
 
Earlier this season, the Cougars and Eagles also tied 1-1, with Anargyros scoring again for UMM. The all-time series between the programs is even at 16-16-7.
