Softball Faces Two Losses on Second Day in Mankato

MANKATO, Minn. - The University of Minnesota Morris softball team faced two tough MIAC opponents, coming away from the day with two losses. Hamline University took game one from the Cougars in a commanding 14-0 shutout. Minnesota Morris held Gustavus Adolphus College to just five runs in game two, while scoring one of their own.

The Pipers opened the game with a six-run inning, putting the Cougars behind early. After holding Hamline to a scoreless second inning, Minnesota Morris was unable to stop their opponent as they dropped a second six-run to lead by 12. The Pipers brought in two more runs at the top of the fifth to shut out the Cougars 14-0 in five innings.

The Cougars posted four hits as a team coming from Malena Mahoney, Anna Athey, Olivia Losee, and Faith Hamm

Gustavus Adolphus 5, Minnesota Morris 1

After going scoreless in the first two innings, the Gusties broke open the scoring. Bringing in runs in the third, fourth, fifth, and six innings, Gustavus boasted a 5-0 lead on the Cougars heading into the seventh inning. Athey crossed home plate on an Isabelle Derhak RBI to score the Cougars' only run of the day. Unfortunately, Minnesota Morris was unable to put any more points on the board and faced a 5-1 loss following the top of the seventh inning. 

The four hits for the Cougars came from Losee, Mahoney, Athey, and Waabigwan Wagner

Minnesota Morris will take a break from playing until Mar. 10 when they travel to North Myrtle Beach, S.C. for the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Break games.
