Game Recap: Softball |

Softball Falls Twice to Northwestern

ST. PAUL, Minn. - The University of Minnesota Morris opened up their series against the University of Northwestern with two losses on day one. The Cougars were unable to score in the first game, falling 0-4, and posted five runs in the second game while falling 5-9. The series will continue Mar. 28 with a 12 pm matchup.

Northwestern 4, Minnesota Morris 0

The Cougar defense, led by Alyssa Thornton in the circle, would hold the Eagles to consecutive three-batter innings to open up the game, before the Eagles opened up the scoring in the bottom of the fourth inning. Northwestern scored all four runs in back-to-back-to-back plays, effectively securing a 4-0 lead. Minnesota Morris worked the bases, with Malena Mahoney getting to within scoring range twice at third base, but the Cougars were unable to find a way home.

Taylor Johnson earned the lone hit of the game, as well the only stolen base for the Cougars. Olivia Losee had four putouts from left field, while Sierra Stevens and Ashley Albert added three from center field and second base respectively. Thornton threw two strikeouts, 12 flyouts and three groundouts from the circle for the Cougars.

Northwestern 9, Minnesota Morris 5

The Eagles got things rolling early in game two, bringing in two runs on one play to open up the scoring in the bottom of the second. The Cougars were quick to respond with a run of their own from Kendra Schmitz as Johnson hit a single up the middle. Northwestern took a significant lead in the bottom of the third with a five-run inning to jump up 7-1. The Minnesota Morris offense battled, earning two hits in the top of the fifth and finding three runs in the top of the sixth. Anna Athey launched a home run to bring in Albert and Mahoney to score and earn three RBIs on the play. Not ready to give up just yet, the Eagles pushed their lead to 9-4 in the bottom of the sixth, forcing the Cougars to catch up. Unfortunately, the lone run scored in the top of the seventh by Courtney Smith would not be enough to take back the lead and the Cougars stared at a four-point gap to finish the game.

Stevens and Mahoney both earned two hits in their four at-bats to lead the offense. Th0rnton led the defense with six putouts at both first base and pitcher. Morgan Wilhelm and Thornton in the circle totaled up eighth flyouts, seven groundouts, and three strikeouts.
