MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - The University of Minnesota Morris baseball team took on Augsburg University in a double header at U.S. Bank Stadium. The Cougars would fall to the Auggies, taking game one to eight innings with a score of 5-6 and keeping the scoring down in game two with a final score of 1-2.
Augsburg 6, Minnesota Morris 5
Minnesota Morris kicked off the game with a run in the top of the first inning when Ethan Schmitz singled to bring Ben Meuser home. Augsburg answered right back with a two run inning of their own and held the Cougars scoreless in the top of the second. The lead returned to Minnesota Morris when both Schmitz and Bradie Black crossed home plate on Tyler Motley RBIs. With the Cougars up 3-2, things stayed scoreless until the bottom of the fifth when the Auggies brought in two runs to sneak past Minnesota Morris. Tyler Moriarty answered right back in the top of the sixth, scoring a run on a David Steffen RBI to tie things up. Augsburg took back the lead in the bottom of the sixth, but Keegan Jonas brought Owen Dylong in to tie the game up again. The Cougar defense stopped the Auggies from scoring to push the game to eight innings. Minnesota Morris was unable to score in the top of the eighth, and Augsburg's run in the bottom of the inning secured the victory for the Auggies.
Motley led the Cougar offense with two hits and two RBIs in game one, while Meuser and Jonas each earned eight putouts to keep things close for the defense.
Augsburg 2, Minnesota Morris 1
Scoring kicked off early for the Auggies in game two as they put up one run in the top of the first. The game remained scoreless for two innings, before Augsburg posted a second run in the top of fourth to jump to a 2-0 lead. The Cougars responded with a run in the bottom of the fourth from Schmitz who crossed home plate on a Motley RBI. Minnesota Morris' defense locked down the Auggies for the rest of the game, but the offense was unable to put any more points on the board in favor of the Cougars. Augsburg held their 2-1 lead at the end of seven innings.
Schmitz had the lone run of the game for the Cougars, while Motley boasted one RBI and McGie earned two hits in his three at-bats in game two. Meuser recorded six putouts and Landen Meyerdirk added another four for Minnesota Morris.
The Cougars head to Florida for the Russ Matt Invitational and will play their first game March 8 against Gordon College. The game is scheduled for a 12:00 PM (1 PM EDT) start time at Lake Myrtle Park.
