Baseball Hits Bombs On Day Two at Chizek

MORRIS, Minn. - The University of Minnesota Morris closed out their series with the University of Wisconsin - Superior with two wins to take the series 2-1. The Cougars totaled up 19 runs on the day, including four home runs in the second game of the day. With the two victories, baseball moves to 11-4 in UMAC play and will face off against Bethany Lutheran College Apr. 25-26 with the hopes of improving their record. 

Minnesota Morris 9, UW-Superior 6

After a slow first inning, the Cougars got the scoring started with two runs in the bottom of the second followed by two more in the third to jump out to a 4-0 lead early in the game. The Yellowjackets answered back to take a 4-5 lead after the sixth inning. Minnesota Morris responded with runs from Ashton Pauly, Ben Meuser, and David Steffen to take back the lead and jump ahead 7-5. Two more runs in the eighth inning secured the victory for the Cougars as the defense allowed just one run in the ninth inning and closed the game out with a popup to Bradie Black at shortstop. 

Minnesota Morris' runs in game one came from Pauly (2), Steffen (3), Trevor Haberman, Meuser (2) and Tyler Moriarty. Steffen and Haberman both went 2-4 at the plate, Ryan McGie picked up four RBIs in his time at the dish. Moriarty collected two stolen bases with Black adding on one more to the total. Keegan Jonas remained a wall behind the plate and totaled up 13 putouts. Parker Gilchrist, Cole Mammenga, Brady Kenning (W), and Steffen (S) all made appearances on the bump for the Cougars and collectively recorded 12 strikeouts, eight flyouts, and five groundouts on the day.

Minnesota Morris 16, UW-Superior 12

It was the Yellowjackets who drew first blood in the second game of the day, but Meuser answered back with a homerun that brought in three runs for Minnesota Morris. McGie stepped up to the plate right after his teammate and knocked in a solo home run to push the lead to 4-1. UW-Superior tied things up but a grand slam from Meuser secured a five-point lead at 9-4 in the bottom of the second. After a perfect double-play to end the top of the third, the Cougars knocked in another run in the bottom of the inning. The Yellowjackets looked to make a comeback, getting as close as 8-10 before a grand slam from Steffen put the Cougars up in a commanding 16-8 fashion. The Minnesota Morris defense held UW-Superior to four more runs, and the Cougars posted a 16-12 victory to close out the day. 

Runs for the Cougars came from Pauly (2), Black (2), Steffen (2), Haberman (2), Meuser (3), McGie (1), Ethan Schmitz (2), Jonas (1), and Moriarty (1). Meuser collected seven RBIs in game two and Steffen picked up another five on his own. Stolen bases for Minnesota Morris came from Black, Steffen, and Moriarty. At first base, Meuser hauled in 11 putouts on the day. The Cougar pitchers for game two were Travis Godfrey (W), Peyton Neadeau, Dane Mammenga, and McGie who collectively earned eight strikeouts, ten flyouts, and eight groundouts.
