In the latest American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Division III Coaches Poll, the Johnnies were ranked fourth. They were ranked fifth in the D3football.com Top 25. This will be St. John's first game of the 2025 season after posting an 11-1 record and reaching the third round of the NCAA Tournament last year.

St. John's will have a new starting quarterback following the graduation of senior Aaron Syverson. Despite appearing in only five games last season, Caden Wheeler led SJU in rushing with 456 yards and returns for his senior year. The Johnnies also return Westin Hoyt, who led the team in interceptions in 2024.

This is the sixth meeting between the two teams, with the all-time series tied at 2-2-1. Their last matchup was on September 10, 1977, when the Cougars earned a 16-3 victory.
