Cougars Drop Conference Opener to Bethany Lutheran

MORRIS, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Morris men's soccer team dropped its Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) opener to Bethany Lutheran College, falling 6-0 on Tuesday afternoon in Morris, Minn.
 
The Vikings improved to 1-4-2 overall and 1-0 in the UMAC, while the Cougars fell to 2-4-1 overall and 0-1 in conference play.
 
The match began with heavy offensive pressure from both teams, as they completed several passes early on. In the 11th minute, Bethany Lutheran recorded the first shot on target and opened the scoring. Less than four minutes later, the Vikings doubled their lead. Jake Anargyros recorded the first shot for the Cougars, but it was saved. Before the end of the half, the Vikings added a third goal.
 
Bethany Lutheran continued its dominance in the second half, scoring two more goals within the first 11 minutes. Cade Simonson had a promising opportunity for the Cougars but sent the ball over the bar. Aaron Mackall also had a strong chance, but his shot went high as well. The Vikings added a final goal to seal the 6-0 victory.
 
Anargyros recorded the only shot on target for the Cougars. Simonson, Mackall, and Burke Sheppard each had one shot, but none were on goal. Nick Isensee made seven saves in the loss.
 
The Cougars will hit the road for a conference matchup against Martin Luther College on Tuesday at 2 p.m.
