Rams best Cougars in nonconference action

MOUNT VERNON, Iowa – The University of Minnesota Morris men's soccer team was defeated 6-0 by Cornell College in a nonconference match Sunday afternoon in Mount Vernon, Iowa.

The Rams improve to 1-2, while the Cougars fall to 1-3.

The game didn't remain scoreless for long, as the Rams netted the first goal less than five minutes into play. The Cougars rolled out a new lineup ahead of the match, and substitute Jake Anargyros nearly made an immediate impact, taking a shot just 30 seconds after coming on. Aaron Mackall also had a promising opportunity but was unable to convert. Cornell doubled its lead with 12 minutes remaining in the half, taking a 2-0 advantage into the break.

The second half mirrored the first, with the Rams scoring an early goal. Mackall and Burke Sheppard had back-to-back chances, but both were denied by Cornell goalkeeper Jack Massey. Despite several additional efforts, the Cougars couldn't find the back of the net, while Cornell continued to capitalize on their chances, ultimately winning 6-0.

Minnesota Morris totaled seven shots on goal in the contest but was unable to score. Mackall and Anargyros each registered two shots on target, while Whitaker Root, Chris Morejon, and Burke Sheppard each added one. Azariah Zappetta was the only Cougar to play the full 90 minutes. In goal, Nick Isensee made three saves, and Dutch Bullock made his Cougar debut.

The Cougars look to bounce back as they host Concordia College (Minn.) on Sept. 10 at 5 p.m.
