MORRIS, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Morris men's soccer team won its third straight game after defeating Crown College 3-0 in Upper Midwest Athletic Conference play Tuesday evening in Morris, Minn.
The Cougars improve to 5-4-2 overall and 3-2-1 in the conference, while the Polars fall to 3-5-2 overall and 2-3-1 in the UMAC.
"We are playing good football, and the players are buying into the system," said head coach
Blake Ordell. "I am really proud of how the players are conducting themselves and the way they are playing together."
The Cougars earned a corner three minutes into the game.
Luis Mendez sent the cross into the box that found
Wilbur Reed for the shot, but it was saved.
Dutch Bullock made his first save minutes later. Mendez got behind the Polars' back line but was fouled, resulting in a red card for Crown in the 17th minute. With the man advantage, Minnesota Morris continued to put pressure on the goalkeeper. It wasn't until the final second of the half that they would capitalize. On another corner, Mendez sent in a low-driven shot that found
Max Kappelmann, who scored with four seconds left on the clock.
Early in the second half,
Azariah Zappetta did all the hard work and sent a pass into the box to
Charlie Adams, who scored his third goal in as many games. The Cougars added one more in the 62nd minute when Adams sent a pass back to Reed, connecting for his first collegiate goal. Minnesota Morris had a few more shots but ended the game with a 3-0 victory over the Polars.
Kappelmann and Reed each scored their first collegiate goals, while Adams scored his third of the season. Earning assists were Mendez, Adams, and Zappetta. The Cougars outshot the Polars 13-7, with six shots on target for UMM.
Jake Anargyros had the most shots on the team with four, with one being on frame. Bullock recorded his fourth shutout and made four saves in the win.
The Cougars travel to Martin Luther College for a 1 p.m. kickoff on Saturday.
