Cougars Drop Both Games in Doubleheader with Moravian

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The University of Minnesota Morris baseball team was defeated by Moravian University 13-12 and 15-0 in two seven-inning games in Auburndale, Fla., Tuesday afternoon.
 
Game 1
Tyler Moriarty started the game with a leadoff walk and then advanced to second after successfully stealing the base. Bradie Black drove him home with a single through the right side. Ryan McGie hit the first home run of the season to increase the lead to 3-0 after the top of the first. Moravian took its first lead of the game after putting up five runs in the bottom of the inning.
 
In the bottom of the second, Parker Gilchrist started by striking out the first two batters of the inning. The Greyhounds then loaded the bases. A diving catch in center field by Landon Meyerdirk got the Cougars out of the inning with no damage done.
 
Moriarty had a leadoff walk to start the top half of the third and then stole second to get into scoring position. Black reached first after drawing a walk. Ben Meuser drove in another run to cut the lead to 5-4 after the third.
 
A sacrifice fly in the third by Moravian with the bases loaded extended the lead, and the Greyhounds added another before the inning was over. Aidan Moran threw out a runner trying to steal third to get out of the inning.
 
Moran reached in the fourth after getting a free pass to first, followed by Peyton Neadeau getting hit by a pitch. Blake Imhoff loaded the bases with a single to right field. Moran scored on a passed ball as the other runners advanced a base. Moriarty reached on a single as Neadeau crossed home. After drawing a walk, Black stole second to get into scoring position. Another passed ball scored Imhoff to tie the game at 7-7. The scoring continued for the Cougars as Trevor Haberman reached on a single, and an error scored Black to give UMM a 9-7 lead after the top of the fourth.
 
Meuser drew a leadoff walk to start the sixth and soon after stole second. Haberman scored Meuser after he singled through the left side of the field. Caleb Walker entered the game to pinch run for Ryan McGie after he reached first. Meyerdirk reached on a bunt single, and an error during the play allowed Haberman to score. Neadeau drew a walk to load the bases. A double play ended the inning as UMM led 11-8.
 
The Greyhounds added two runs in the sixth to pull within one. Breckin Silvain ended the inning by striking out the final batter.
 
Moriarty drew his third walk of the game to start the seventh inning. He then reached third after a wild pitch and a Black groundout. Meuser hit a sacrifice fly to center field to push the lead to 12-10. The Greyhounds would score three in the final inning, walking off the Cougars on a passed ball to win 13-12.
 
The Cougars had 10 hits, with Imhoff, Haberman, and Moriarty leading the team with two each. Moriarty reached base five times, adding three walks to his two singles. Meuser, Haberman, and McGie tallied a team-high two RBIs apiece, while Moriarty scored four runs.
 
On the mound, Gilchrist pitched three innings, striking out two batters while giving up six hits and four earned runs. Silvain pitched the following three innings with five strikeouts, three hits, and three earned runs. Luke McHugh pitched the final inning, giving up two hits and two earned runs.
 
Game 2
The Greyhounds scored one run in the first to start the game and kept the momentum throughout. Moravian broke the game open in the third after scoring eight runs.
 
Fred Huebner had the first hit for the Cougars in the third inning with a single to right field. In the following inning, Black singled to left field, and two batters later Haberman drew a walk to put two runners on with one out, but the Cougars would leave them on base.
 
In the bottom of the sixth, Joey Chilton recorded his first collegiate hit with a single to the third baseman. In the seventh, the Cougars had a chance to get on the board after Taeyvn Brown was hit by a pitch and McGie drew a walk. The following three batters went down in order as Moravian won 15-0.
 
Chilton, Black, and Huebner all recorded a hit in game two, while Haberman and McGie reached via walk. Pitching in game two was Travis Godfrey, who went 2.2 innings with one strikeout. Eleven runs were scored, but only two were earned. Juna Bess, Emmett Campbell, and Neadeau pitched the final 4.1 innings, combining for six strikeouts.
 
The Cougars have one game tomorrow (Wednesday) as they play Utica University at 8:15 a.m.
