ST. PETER, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Morris baseball team fell in the series finale to Crown College, 13-10, in Upper Midwest Athletic Conference play Sunday afternoon in St. Peter, Minn.
The Polars took the lead in the top of the first with a sacrifice fly to center field.
The Cougars answered in the bottom of the fourth as
Ben Meuser drew a walk, and
Kellan Oligmueller hit his first collegiate home run to put UMM up 2-1. The lead swung back to Crown in the top of the fifth with a two-run inning.
Landen Meyerdirk drew a walk in the fifth, then stole second and third. An error by the pitcher allowed Meyerdirk to score and Minnesota Morris to tie the game.
In the sixth inning, the teams combined for 11 runs. The Polars extended their lead by scoring four runs, but the Cougars responded.
Blake Imhoff reached base after being hit by a pitch, and Meyerdirk was also hit to earn a free pass.
Tyler Moriarty singled to load the bases.
The scoring began with Meuser singling to center field to drive in two runs. Oligmueller added to his RBI total with a single that brought in two more runs, tying the game at 7-7.
Peyton Neadeau gave the Cougars the lead with a double to left field.
Bradie Black followed with an RBI single up the middle. The final run of the inning came on a dropped third strike that allowed Black to score, making it 10-7.
The Polars responded with their largest inning of the game, scoring five runs in the eighth and adding one more in the ninth. In the final two innings, UMM managed just one baserunner and ultimately fell 13-10.
The Cougars recorded 10 hits in the contest, with Meuser leading the team with three. Oligmueller and Black each added two hits. Oligmueller had a team-high four RBIs, while Meuser drove in two runs. Three student-athletes scored two runs: Meuser, Oligmueller, and Meyerdirk.
On the mound,
Travis Godfrey pitched 6.2 innings, striking out two batters, walking one, and giving up three earned runs.
Ryan McGie pitched the next 1.1 innings, striking out one batter, and
Emmett Campbell threw the final inning.
The Cougars travel to Bethany Lutheran College for a three-game UMAC series beginning Friday at 3 p.m.
