Concordia College Rallies to Defeat Minnesota Morris

MOORHEAD, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Morris baseball team was defeated by Concordia College–Moorhead, 9–8, in a nonconference game Thursday in Moorhead, Minn.
 
Ryan McGie recorded the first hit for Minnesota Morris with a single in the second inning. In the following inning, Fred Huebner recorded his second hit of the season with a single to center field. Taeyvn Brown then drew a walk to put two runners on with one out. The Cougars scored their first run on an RBI single from Tyler Moriarty. In the bottom of the inning, the Cobbers answered to tie the game at 1–1.
 
The Cougars scored again in the sixth. McGie had the team's first extra-base hit with a double to center field and later came around to score on a single from Colton Palmer. John Cromwell added a single before Augie Goethals drove in a pair of runs with a double. Brown drove in the final run of the inning with a double to left field, putting UMM up 5–1.
 
In the bottom of the sixth, the Cobbers threatened by loading the bases with two outs. The Cougars escaped the jam when Johnny Lopez forced a groundball out.
 
McGie started the seventh inning with a leadoff double for the second straight inning. Cromwell extended the Minnesota Morris lead with his first home run as a Cougar. The Cobbers drew level in the bottom of the seventh, scoring six runs.
 
Caleb Walker and Peyton Neadeau reached base in the eighth by drawing walks. Both advanced to scoring position but were left stranded. The Cobbers then took the lead in the bottom half of the inning, going up 9–7 heading into the ninth.
 
Cromwell hit his second home run of the game to bring the Cougars within one. The following batters went down in order as Concordia held on to win, 9–8.
 
UMM totaled 12 hits, with McGie and Cromwell leading the team with three apiece. Moriarty also had a multi-hit game with two. Cromwell hit his first two home runs of the season, while McGie had two doubles, and Brown and Goethals each doubled. Cromwell also led the team with three RBIs and three runs scored.
 
On the mound, Lopez pitched six innings, allowing only one earned run while striking out five. Zach Anderson pitched 1.1 innings, recording a pair of strikeouts while allowing six earned runs. Tim Buckles recorded the final two outs.
 
The Cougars continue their nonconference road trip as they take on St. John's University on Friday at 5 p.m.
