Morris, Minn. – Gregory Ohman on the University of Minnesota Morris football and track and field team earned the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference Scholar-Athlete Leadership Award announced on April 27.
The UMAC Scholar-Athlete Leadership Award is presented to student-athletes who embody what it means to be an NCAA Division III student-athlete. Through this award, the UMAC recognizes the role athletics plays in developing leaders by rewarding athletes' excellence in the classroom as well as their service to the community.
The NCAA Division III student-athlete is unique among intercollegiate athletes because, at Division III institutions, student-athletes receive no financial aid for athletics participation. Such institutions emphasize the overall quality of the educational experience and the successful completion of the student's academic program; athletic participation is an important part of that educational experience. Division III provides opportunities for student-athletes to be a part of numerous campus activities in addition to athletics, and these finalists have maximized those opportunities.
Ohman competed as a member of the Minnesota Morris football and track and field teams for four years. On the football field, he earned UMAC All-Conference honors three times as a linebacker and once as a long snapper. During his senior season, Ohman was named to the D3football.com Third Team All-Region, earned UMAC Defensive Player of the Week honors, and was selected to the D3football.com Team of the Week.
In track and field, the Lake Nebagamon, Wis., native earned UMAC All-Conference honors twice in the discus and ranks eighth all-time in program history in the event.
Academically, Ohman has been named to the Dean's List seven times and earned Academic All-UMAC honors every season in both sports. He is also a three-time CSC Academic All-District selection in football and earned the honor once in track and field.
Outside of athletics, Ohman has been actively involved in the community. His volunteer efforts include work with Feed My Starving Children, Community Meals, and Trick-or-Can, as well as participation in events such as the Parade of Lights, Snowball setup, tip nights, and the Polar Plunge. He has assisted with new student move-in, helped lead elementary physical education classes, and taken part in programs like Cougar Day of Play, Special Olympics bowling, and RFC homeschool co-op classes. Additionally, he has completed two week-long mission trips to Guatemala and Jackson, Miss., and serves as a Cougar Football ambassador.
Ohman is majoring in business management with a minor in economics. Following graduation, he plans to return to northern Wisconsin with his wife, Jordan, to save money before embarking on a three-month mission trip to Zambia in August. Afterward, the couple hopes to pursue long-term mission work.
