Box Score 2 SUPERIOR, Wis. – The University of Minnesota Morris baseball team split an Upper Midwest Athletic Conference doubleheader against the University of Wisconsin-Superior, dropping game one 14-0 before winning game two 8-1 Saturday in Superior, Wis.
Following the doubleheader, the Cougars are 18-17 overall and 12-5 in the UMAC, while the Yellowjackets move to 24-12 overall and 13-4 in conference play.
Game 1
The Yellowjackets took the lead in the first inning on a home run and did not look back.
The Cougars recorded their first hit in the third inning on a single from
Trevor Haberman, but he was erased on a double play in the next at-bat.
Kellan Oligmueller reached base in the fifth with a double but was left stranded. Minnesota Morris had one more baserunner in the sixth as
Peyton Neadeau drew a leadoff walk, but the Cougars remained scoreless in a 14-0 loss.
The Cougars totaled two hits from Haberman and Oligmueller.
Sebastian Bark got the start on the mound and pitched five innings, striking out two while allowing 11 earned runs.
Andrew Franson pitched the final innings, giving up two earned runs.
Game 2
Game two was a different story for UMM.
Landen Meyerdirk led off with a double and advanced to third when
Tyler Moriarty reached on an error. Minnesota Morris executed a double steal to score the first run of the game.
Bradie Black tripled to drive in another run and later scored on a balk to give UMM a 3-0 lead after the top of the first inning. The Yellowjackets added a run in the bottom half.
The Cougars loaded the bases in the fifth inning with singles from
Ben Meuser and Oligmueller along with an error. Neadeau doubled to bring in two runs and extend the lead to 5-1.
The lead grew to five after a solo home run from Meuser in the sixth. In the following inning, Black doubled and advanced to third on a dropped third strike. Neadeau reached on a walk. A wild pitch scored Black and advanced Neadeau, who then stole third. Another wild pitch brought him home for the final run of the game, giving UMM the 8-1 victory.
Minnesota Morris tallied 14 hits, with Black leading the team with three. Meuser, Meyerdirk, Oligmueller, Haberman, and Neadeau each recorded multi-hit games, while
Tim Pietsch added one hit. Neadeau drove in a team-high two runs, while Black and Meuser each scored twice.
Ryan McGie pitched a complete game, striking out six, issuing one walk, and allowing eight hits with no earned runs.
The Cougars and Yellowjackets will wrap up the series Sunday at 12 p.m.
