MORRIS, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Morris women's soccer team was defeated 1-0 by a late Martin Luther College goal in Upper Midwest Athletic Conference play Tuesday afternoon in Morris, Minn.
The two teams were evenly matched, with neither team getting a great look on goal. The Cougars had the first shot on target in the sixth minute when
Brianna Ganske fired a low drive.
Ashlynn Pollreisz soon had a chance at goal, but her shot was saved. The Knights recorded their first shot on target, but
CJ Frear-Boerner was there to make the save. The teams continued to trade shots, but the game remained tied 0-0 entering halftime.
MLC had the first shot of the second half, but Frear-Boerner stopped the attempt. Seconds later, Pollreisz had a shot, but was denied. The Knights finally broke the deadlock in the 78th minute after an attacker got through the back line. In the final seconds, UMM had a chance to draw level with a corner kick, but the cross hit the crossbar twice, ending the game 1-0 in favor of the Knights.
The Cougars totaled nine shots in the contest to the Knights' 13. Pollreisz paced the team with five shots, four of which were on target. Ganske and
Keiran Kelly also recorded a shot on target in the game. Frear-Boerner played all 90 minutes in goal, making seven saves.
The Cougars continue their home stand as they host the University of Wisconsin-Superior on Saturday at 2 p.m.
