Dan Magner enters his 14th season as the head coach of the Minnesota Morris women’s soccer program in 2019. At UMN Morris, Coach Manger has an overall record of 136-96-15 and a record of 112-45-9 in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC). A sustained level of the student-athletes giving their maximum effort academically and athletically has been the trade mark of Magner’s time here at Minnesota Morris.
On the field in 2018, the team advanced to the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Tournament for its 15th straight season. A four-time UMAC Coach of the Year, Magner earned his 200th college coaching victory on Oct. 6, 2018 (3-2 at Bethany Lutheran).
Off the field in 2018, senior Yu Ito received the prestigious United Soccer Coaches Scholar All-Region honor for her elite work in the classroom. She is the 22nd UMN Morris women’s student-athlete to receive the award.
Along with her United Soccer Coaches Scholar All-Region honor in 2018, she was named to the United Soccer Coaches All-Region team for her superb on-field performance. She is the first-ever UMN Morris women’s soccer student-athlete to earn the honor on three occasions.
Eight members of the women’s soccer program were named to the UMAC All-Academic Team in 2018 by earning a 3.5 GPA or higher during the fall semester. Those student-athletes are Ito, Marie Jakubowski, Linnea Kingbird-Martini, Brooke Lorentz, Hannah Pedderson, Grace Penke, Sam Tate and Michelle Wolney. In each of her four years at Minnesota Morris, Ito earned UMAC Academic All-Conference honors.
Three student-athletes earned UMAC All-Conference honors in the fall 2018 season and those include: Megan Ellingboe, Ito and Lorentz. Ito is one of eight Cougars to garner UMAC All-Conference honors in each of her four years while competing for the Maroon and Gold.
During the 2018-19 school year, Cougar alumnae Rachael Berns, Molly Hancuh, Ally Heida, Torri Jordan, and Katie Kestner were named to the UMAC All-Decade Team.
In 2017, for the first time in program history, a Cougar was named the UMAC Offensive Player of the Year. Molly Hancuh, first all-time in career assists and second all-time in career goals in program history, earned this honor.
The 2016 team captured the UMAC Tournament Championship on its way to earning the program’s first NCAA Tournament berth. This was the second UMAC Tournament Championship for the Cougars under Coach Magner (2006).
Magner has mentored four UMAC Defensive Players of the Year, with Jordan deservedly earning the honor in 2016. She joins Berns, Heida and Kestner in earning this award during their playing careers at Minnesota Morris. Along with the four UMAC Defensive Players of the Year, Magern has coached Molly Hancuh, who was named the 2017 UMAC Offensive Player of the Year.

Under Coach Magner, the Cougars have received the United Soccer Coaches College Team Academic Award for 12 times (18 times in program history) and the United Soccer Coaches Team Ethics Award of Merit 11 times (14 times in program history).

Prior to his time at UMN Morris, Magner spent five seasons at St. Bonaventure University (NY), an NCAA Division I and Atlantic-10 conference member. The student-athletes he coached earned multiple academic honors including “Ideal St. Bonaventure Student”, NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship, NSCAA Scholar All-Region and A-10 Academic All-Conference. In each of his five seasons the team earned the NSCAA College Team Academic Award. One of Magner’s former players was recently inducted in to the St. Bonaventure University – Athletics Hall of Fame.
As an assistant coach at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst he helped the team earn back to back Atlantic-10 tournament appearances. He also served as an assistant coach at Wake Forest University (NC) where the team advanced to the NCAA Division I National Tournament “Sweet 16”. Head coaching stints at the University of Kansas, Lafayette College (PA) and Wheaton College (MA) round out his collegiate experience.
Four of the boys’ soccer teams Magner coached at Cohasset High School (MA) were inducted in to the CHS Hall of Fame. Five of his former players have been inducted in to the CHS Hall of Fame. In his time as a high school coach he earned Boston Globe Coach of the Year and EMASCA Coach of the Year honors.
Magner is an active member of the United Soccer Coaches association (USC) and has been involved with the Olympic Development Program (ODP) at the state and regional level. He currently serves on the United Soccer Coaches DIII North Region Rankings group. He has served on the NCAA DIII North Region Advisory Committee. He has earned the United Soccer Coaches Advanced National and National diploma’s and has completed international coaching courses in Germany and Portugal. Most recently Coach Magner successfully completed a World Football Academy “Football Periodization” course.
In addition to his coaching duties at Minnesota Morris, Coach Magner currently serves as a member of the Academic Integrity Hearing Committee. He has also served on the Scholastic Committee, Activity Fee Review Committee (AFRC), Academic Alert Committee and instructed Sport Studies and Athletics (SSA) courses.
Magner is a native of Hingham, Massachusetts, and currently resides in Glenwood, Minnesota. He enjoys live concerts, hiking, cheering on the Boston Bruins, reading, bird watching and being entertained by ChewieB and Apollo, his rambunctious cats.
