Mayville, N.D. – The University of Minnesota, Morris women's basketball team lost their third straight on Nov. 30, dropping a 78-68 decision on the road at Mayville State.
Minnesota, Morris (2-3) trailed by four at the break at 31-27, but was outscored 47-41 in the second half for the final 10-point spread. Host Mayville State (1-5) earns their first win of the season, capitalizing 26 Cougar turnovers and a 37-to-27 advantage on the boards.
With 27 rebounds, it marks the lowest output of the season for the Cougars, and the 10-rebound difference is the biggest disparity allowed by UMM this season.
The Comets pulled down 17 offensive rebounds on the night, leading to 69 total Mayville State field goals, while the Cougars were held to 57 shots on the night.
The Cougar defense held strong, limiting the Comets to a shooting percentage of .391 (27-of-69), but what they could not answer was their .941 (16-of-17) mark at the line. Mayville State went to the line 12 times in the second half, hitting 11 of them as they pulled away for the win.
The Cougars finished with a .474 (27-of-57) mark from the floor on the night, which included a .556 (15-of-27) mark in the second half. However, UMM was held to just a .500 (7-of-14) night at the charity stripe, their lowest output of the season.
Steph Roggenbuck (Osakis, Minn.) led the way for the Cougars with 17 points, her third straight game in double figures and second highest mark of the season.
Tara Thielke (Hancock, Minn.) hit double figures for the second time on the season with 14, while Alyssa Silva (Maple Grove, Minn.) added 12, going over ten for the first time since the season opener. Finally Abby Fragodt (Benson, Minn.) chipped in 10 for the second straight game, along with a team high seven rebounds.
The Cougars will now return home as they look to snap out of their current three-game losing skid. On Thursday, Dec. 2 they host North Central on Jim Gremmels Court at 5:30 p.m. In the first meeting between the two this season, in the season opener, the Cougars kicked off the season with an 84-65 win.
