Playing in a four-team inter-conference tournament in Mankato today, the Cougar softball team notched two important UMAC wins. In the first game, UMM defeated Martin Luther College, 11-6, and in game 2 routed Bethany Lutheran, 13-5.
Game 1 Box
Second baseman
Heidi Miller pounded four RBIs in three innings, giving the Cougars an early jump on Martin Luther College in game 1.
First year pitchers
Kali Cordes and
Emily Mehr combined over seven innings with the win to Mehr who closed the game after relieving Cordes in the second inning.
In addition to fine defense, the Cougars would churn out 19 hits in the game with seven players having two hits or more. Senior catcher
Julie Rohling went four for five. Shortstop
Britney Glisczinski scored three runs.
Mehr kept the Knights off the board until the fourth inning when they picked up a pair of runs and another run in the fifth.
But in the top of the sixth, Mehr helped her own cause with a two-run double that sealed the win.
Game 2 Box
In game two, Rohling sparked the Cougars with a grand slam in the second inning. She would finish the game with 5 RBIs. Glisczinski and sophomore
Tasha Johnson would also hit home runs for UMM.
Sophomore
Kelli Hamilton and Cordes combined on a seven-hitter, leading the Cougars to a 13-5 win.
Once again, UMM played superb defense, an errorless game.
The Cougars trailed 3-1 after the first inning. In the top of the second, Bethany scored four against Hamilton, who was relieved by Cordes in the next inning.
Rohling's blast would give UMM the lead again and they would not look back.
The two wins give UMM an 11-6 conference record going into the St. Scholastica Crossover this weekend in Duluth.
