Softball Drops a Pair on Day 2 of UMAC Crossover

After exploding for 35 runs on day 1 of the UMAC Crossover, the Cougar softball team faced a pair of good pitchers and managed just two runs in two games on day 2.  In game 1, they fell to UMAC-leading St. Scholastica 11-1 and dropped the second game 3-1 to Northland College.

Box Score v. CSS

Saints' junior Brittni Johnson threw a three-hitter to defeat the Cougars in game 1.  Two of UMM's hits came in the fifth inning when they scored their only run of the game, an Emily Mehr single that moved shortstop Britney Glisczinski across the plate.

Cougar pitcher Kelli Hamilton managed to keep the game close early, but a big fourth inning forced her to turn the game over to Mehr.

Box Score v. Northland

UMM's Kali Cordes and Northland's Brittany Schmitt dueled in a scoreless tie for five innings.

Then in the sixth, the Lumberjills scored twice on three hits.  In the next top half, they added a third run.

Coming into the bottom of the seventh, the Cougars rallied some offense.  After catcher Julie Rohling reached on an error, Glisczinski and Johnson hit back to back singles, but Rohling was out at the plate on the latter.  Junior Heather Briese followed with another single scoring Glisczinski, but that would be all UMM could manage.

The losses today, however, did not damage the Cougars' postseason hopes.  They are still firmly in second place with the UMAC championships scheduled for next weekend.
