Softball Takes Two in Day 1 at UMAC Crossover

One romp and one nail biter... that's how day 1 at the UMAC Crossover proceeded for the Cougar softball team.  They defeated Crown 18-3 in the first game and hung on to top Northwestern 17-15.

(NOTE) The victory in game 2 brought the Cougars' season total to 16 wins, the most in school history!

v. Crown Box Score

First year Emily Mehr and sophomore Kelli Hamilton combined on five-inning four-hitter to defeat Crown College 18-3.

On offense, the Cougars banged out 18 hits, led by shortstop Britney Glisczinski's two doubles and three RBIs on a 4 for 5 afternoon.

UMM roared early, scoring 11 runs in the first, nearly batting around twice before the Purple Storm could get their first at bats.  Centerfielder Liz Leuty, second baseman Heidi Miller, and third baseman Diane Blommel scored twice in the inning.

v. Northwestern Box Score

Game 2 was a seesaw slugfest as the Cougars bolted to a 7-5 lead after three innings.  Northwestern scored six in innings four and five for an 11-7 lead.  UMM countered with an eight run sixth inning and hung on for a 17-15 win.

Sophomore Tasha Johnson, Hamilton and Mehr collaborated for seven tough innings with Hamilton getting the win and the save to Mehr.

Glisczinski led UMM hitters again with another 4 for 5 performance.  Right fielder Heather Briese and Blommel each had three RBIs a piece.  Briese hit a three-run triple in the eight-run eighth.

The Cougars improved their record to 16-20 overall and 13-6 in the UMAC.
