Duluth, Minn. – The University of Minnesota men's soccer team faced off with St. Scholastica this afternoon, and after 110:00 minutes of play, the defenses prevailed resulting in the 0-0 double overtime tie.
Minnesota, Morris (2-3-3, 1-1-1) was paced by goalkeeper Tyler Simpson (Broomfield, Colo.) who made four saves on the day and defended against 11 Saint corner kicks.
St. Scholastica (6-2-1, 3-0-1) suffers their first tie of the season, despite out-shooting the Cougars 9-to-2 on the day. The Saints were led by Toby Peter with a game high three shots in the match.
Toby Glaser (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Greg Borchers (Wesminster, Colo.) were the only two Cougars to tally a shot on the day, but they made them worthwhile as each landed on net.
Glaser's shot came right at the end of the first overtime from the far right wing, and was the only action of the extra session.
In the second overtime, things heated up, as St. Scholastica notched two shots from right inside the box as well as two corner kicks to add to their scoring chances.
After winning their UMAC opener, the Cougars have now suffered a loss and a tie to sit at 1-1-1 early in the conference season. They will look to get back in the win column tomorrow, when they take on Northland at 2:00 p.m.
