Stats

Superior, Wis. - The Minnesota Morris men's soccer team scored a dramatic late-match win today (Sept. 6), with a 1-0 decision over UW-Superior on a goal at the 87:39 mark.

It was better late than never for Cory Schmeling (Hudson, Colo.) who took a pass from Matt Vik (St. Paul, Minn.) and beat Yellow Jacket goalkeeper Tom Fitzer for the victory.

Already with one shutout on the young season, the Cougar defense was up to the task again, limiting UW-Superior to just six second half shots, with just three landing on goal. The Yellow Jackets were also held to just one corner in the match, including none in the second half, while the Cougars took four on the day.

Pitching the shutout and collecting seven saves along the way was goalkeeper Tyler Simpson (Brookfield, Colo.) who got the win in his first start of the season.

With an even record of 1-1-1 the Cougars will return home next weekend for a pair of matches with St. Thomas and Macalester on Sept. 11 and 12 respectively.

It will be the final non conference tune-up for UMM, as they begin UMAC play the following weekend. The will get to open league play at home however, as they host Crown on Sept. 17.
