Morris, Minn. – The University of Minnesota, Morris defeated Northland College tonight (Jan. 28) 57-47, continuing their win streak to seven straight. With their win tonight, the Cougars are now 6-0 in UMAC play. They also have won 19 straight regular season UMAC games.
Steph Roggenbuck (Osakis, Minn.) continued her hot play this year in UMAC action tonight, as her and Tara Thielke (Hancock, Minn.) led the team with 15 points each. Roggenbuck, now has 975 career points at UMM, and will look to try and reach 1,000 career points in tomorrow's (Jan. 29) game against St. Scholastica. Roggenbuck went 7-of-13 from the field, and has now scored in double figures in 16 out of 17 games this season with the only exception a nine-point effort. Noordmans (Hancock, Minn.) also got into the mix tonight, by scoring 10 points.
Defense was the story of the game tonight, as the Cougars held the Jills to only 47 total points.Â
"It was pretty rough down low," Roggenbuck said. "It was more of a defensive game than an offensive game I thought. But that's just the way it is with Northland, they're a defensive team."
The 47 points given up, is the second lowest this season. The Cougars had a tough task of stopping Northland's two highest scorers, Ashley Runge and Maria Mackey. Coming into tonight's game Runge was averaging 12 points a game and last Tuesday she went 5 of-5 from the three-point against Finlandia University. Coming into tonight's game, Mackey was averaging 14 points a game, but tonight the pair was held to only four points.
Even though, UMM only scored 57 points, which is the lowest total scored in a victory, it controlled the tempo during the majority of the game. The Jills had their biggest lead of the game, which was six, with 15:13 left of the first half. The Cougars outscored the Jills 14-to-5 over a 5:07 run to take the 20-17 with 10:06 left in the first half. That was a lead that they would not relinquish during the rest of the game.
UMM dominated the points in the paint tonight, outscoring Northland 26-16. They also out-rebounded the Jills 16-13.
The Cougars played smart basketball in the first half, they only had two turnovers. They forced nine turnovers on the defensive end. The Cougars also took advantage of the limited free throws they shot 6-of-7 off of the free throw line.
The Cougars have four players that have scored in every game this season, Emily Mehr (Aitkin, Minn.), Roggenbuck, Brandi Cresap (Perham, Minn.) and Noordmans. As a team UMM, has outscored their opponents 1240-to-1088.
The Cougars will wrap up the first half of the UMAC season tomorrow (Jan. 29) when they play host to the Saints of St. Scholastica at 3:00 p.m. on Jim Gremmels Court. Last year, UMM defeated CSS in both matchups. The men's team will play after them at 5:00 p.m., make sure to wear white and get their early to win a chance to get the "Best Seat in the House."
