Morris, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Morris volleyball team swept the LumberJills of Northland today (Oct. 15), snapping a three-game losing streak in the process. The Cougars won by scores of 25-11, 25-18 and 25-22 in the three sets.
Morris (13-8, 5-4 UMAC) was in control of the game from the beginning. The Cougars never trailed Northland (1-20, 0-9 UMAC) with the score tied only three times.
In the first set Morris hit for a match high .308 with 15 kills and only three errors.
The second set was more of the same story with the Cougar defense shutting down the LumberJill offense. Morris held Northland to a -.049 average.
In the third and final set, the younger players were able to finish of the win for the Cougars, posting 15 kills against six errors.
Stephanie Schmiesing (Melrose, Minn.) led the team in kills, but the top performance goes to Hannah Terhaar (Andover). Terhaar had a career high 10 kills and seven digs.
On her performance, Terhaar said “It was really fun to play good and be successful.” About continuing the play for the rest of the season, Tehaar noted “It is good for our momentum and it to keep going next weekend and get some more wins in the conference.”
Natalie Thomas (Champlin, Minn.) continued her streak of 20 or more assists in a game, she had 23 on the afternoon. Alyssa Tyler (Anoka) had 15 assists of her own and overall Morris had 40. The Cougars set a season high for digs in a three set game with 79, while the is the fourth highest for a game this season. Brita Humphrey (Minnetonka, Minn.) led the team with 13 digs, with Kaylie Clark (Garden Plain, Kans.) at 11 and Anna Peterson (Moorhead, Minn.) with 10. Humphrey and Emily Auch (Benson) both also had two serve aces each.
The Cougars will be in action this Tuesday (Oct. 18) as they will travel up to Moorhead, Minn. to take on Concordia-Moorhead and Mayville State. The first game will take place at 4:30 p.m. and they will play again later that night at 7:30 p.m.
