Women’s Basketball Falls 88-76 to Mayville State

Box Score Mayville, N.D. – The Minnesota Morris women's basketball team suffered their second straight loss on Nov. 29, dropping an 88-76 contest to Mayville State.

Playing their second straight game against a team from the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), the Cougars found similar results. Emily Mehr (Aitkin, Minn.) put down a game-high 18 points, but it wasn't enough as the Cougars couldn't overcome a nine-point halftime deficit.

Mayville State built up their lead with a 14-of-28 (50%) first half from the floor, while also taking advantage of a Morris team that went 11-of-28 (39%) over the first 20 minutes. Added into the Cougars' struggles was a 1-of-8 (13%) mark from long range.

The host Comets had five players finish in double figures, led by 17 from Megan Groen.

Mehr was joined on the leader board by Connor Lewis (Barnesville, Minn.), who went a perfect 5-of-5 from the floor on her way to a career high 13 points. Abby Fragodt (Benson, Minn.) led the way on the boards with 11, as the Cougars out-rebounded the Comets 35-to-29 on the night.

The Cougars offense got going in the second half but the Comets offense was too much as they held off the late push to comfortably win the game 88-76.

Turnovers played a key role in the game, as Mayville State finished plus-six in turnover margin, forcing the Cougars into 29 on the night.

The Cougars fall below the .500 mark at 2-3 on the season, while Mayville State improves to 8-2.

The Cougars continue play on the road next week, also continuing play against the NAIA when they travel to Valley City State on Dec. 7 for a 5:30 tip. The Cougars then return home two days later to host Mayville State in a rematch on Dec. 9.
