Mankato, Minn. – The Minnesota Morris men's soccer team used a lone first half goal to get by Bethany Lutheran 1-0, today (Sept. 30) in Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) action.
Matt Johnson (Monument, Colo.) scored his second of the year at the 21:39 mark, using assists from Greg Borchers (Westminster, Colo.) and Ebrima Badgie (Banjul, The Gambia). It's the second straight game with a goal for Johnson, while team scoring leader, Badgie notches his 10th point of the year.
The Cougars (5-3-2, 4-1-0 UMAC) had the pressure on all game, finishing with 21 shots to just seven for the Vikings (3-6-0, 1-4-0 UMAC). It's the second straight match the Cougars have put up over 20 shots, after doing so just once in the season's first eight matches.
Johnson scored on one of just two shots on the day, while Badgie led the way with seven, giving him 15 in just the last two games. He posted a career high eight in the win over Northland on Sep. 25.
The Vikings got their seven shots from just three players, and made them worth it with five landing on net.
Cougar goalkeeper Tyler Weber (Erie, Colo.) stopped all five though, his second best save mark of the season. Weber and the defense also post their sixth shutout of the season, already over halfway to their total of 11 from last season. tpdays shutout mark also marks the third time in Weber's career he has posted at least six in a season.
Winners of two straight and three of their last four, the Cougars continue the weekend tomorrow (Oct.1) when they travel to New Ulm to take on Martin Luther. Start time is set for12:00 p.m. and will wrap up the first trip through the conference schedule.
