Clermont, Fla. – The Minnesota Morris softball team were finally able to play their first games of their annual spring break trip (Mar. 12) after weather cancelled the first day of action for the Cougars. Morris dropped both of their games, 9-4, and 7-0, with the first game coming against Hood and the second against Bethany.
Kelli Hamilton made her second pitching appearance, and her first start of the season. Hamilton pitched six innings giving up nine runs on 13 hits.
Morris took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning, on a Kelsey Draper two-run homerun, which is her first of the season. Hood responded with six unanswered runs of their own over the next two innings.
The Cougars would get a run back in the top of the fourth, though, when Molly Olson recorded her first RBI of the season. Olson singled to score Jessica Gordon from was on second.
Hood tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the fourth to extend their lead to five, finishing odd a 9-4 win for Hood.
In the second game of the double, Morris took the field against Bethany. Bethany would emerge with a 7-0 shutout of Morris, only allowing four hits.
Mariah Essig took the mound to start her second game of the season. Essig allowed seven runs, 17 hits, and only walked one batter in six innings of work.
Morris and Bethany remained scoreless until the bottom of the third, when Bethany was able to score two runs on four hits. Bethany continued to tack in runs every inning until the end of the game.
Olson finished the day leading the team with three hits, and was second on the team in RBI, behind only Draper who had two.
Morris ended the day 0-2, and currently is at 0-4 on the season. Hood sits at 3-4, while Bethany is at 1-3.
