The Cougar softball team has a jam-packed week ahead, playing three road doubleheaders in a five-day stretch. It all starts Tuesday (Apr. 10) at Bethany Lutheran with a 3:00 first pitch. Then over the weekend, UMM travels to Northwestern on Friday (Apr. 13) for a 3:00 p.m. twin bill, and to Crown on Saturday (Apr. 14) for a 12:00 affair.

Storyline: After a disappointing sweep last week, the Cougars will need to take advantage of these six games as the hope to keep pace in the race for the UMAC Tournament.

For the Record: The Cougars sit at 2-12 on the year with a 1-2 record in UMAC action, while Bethany Lutheran is atop the league with a 3-0 conference mark and a 7-14 overall record. Northwestern is 7-13 overall and 2-1 in the UMAC, and Crown is just getting their season underway at 0-5 overall with a 0-3 conference record.

Last Time Out: Last week, the Cougars were swept at the hands of Martin Luther, falling first 7-6 in nine innings, before the Knights completed the sweep with an 8-0 win in game two.

Last Season: Bethany Lutheran swept their doubleheader with the Cougars last season 9-3 and 8-3, while the Cougars cruised by Crown, winning 9-0 and 11-0, each in five innings. Against Northwestern, the Cougars split, winning 8-3, but losing 3-1.

About the Cougars: After falling in nine innings in game-one to Martin Luther, the Cougars were shutout in an 8-0 loss in game two … 2-0 in road games … Jordan Iverson's four home runs lead the team, as does her .811 slugging percentage … eight of Iverson's 12 hits have been for extra bases … Mercedes Klimek and Kelsey Draper are the only players to start all 14 games … three players are batting over .300, led by Molly Olson's .368 … four players have double-digit hits, led by Olson's 14 … Mariah Essig and Kelli Hamilton have pitched 72 of 79 innings this season …. Essig has 35 strikeouts on 41.1 innings … against Martin Luther, Essig had a career high nine strikeouts.  

About the Vikings: Only UMAC team to sweep a doubleheader from the Cougars last season … only unbeaten team left after one week of conference play, beating Martin Luther and Presentation … 2-1 at home … 21 games played is UMAC high … five players have started all 21 games … scored season high 11 runs in last outing … pitching staff is second in the UMAC, holding opponents to a .297 average … 64 runs allowed are UMAC best … second best fielding team in the UMAC with a .948 fielding percentage … Amanda Edmison and Emily Rauchman have pitched every inning of the season, splitting starts 11 and 10 respectively … placed fourth in the UMAC regular season and third in the tournament in 2011.

About the Eagles: One of four teams tied with 2-1 records in the UMAC … 3-3 at home … five players are batting over .300, led by Briana Rodgers at .418 … six players have started all 20 games … have yet to hit a homerun … have went 4-3 over last six games after opening season 3-10 … split series with defending champ St. Scholastica … 81 runs scored are third in the UMAC … 116 strikeouts by batters lead the UMAC … 4.06 ERA is third … 102 batters struck out also lead the UMAC … Molly Johnsen and Kelsey Timm have pitched all but two innings this season … Johnsen owns 63 strikeouts in 52.1 innings … placed third in the UMAC regular season and was runner-up in the tournament in 2011.

About the Storm: Just opened season on Apr. 2 … have given up at least eight runs in each game including 23 and 13 in doubleheader loss to Northland … Kendra Magaard leads the team with a .444 batting average, with Alecia Johnson second at .429 … Magaard owns the teams only two extra base hits, with one triple and one double … four pitchers have split time in the circle, with Carissa Beers 5.60 ERA leading the team … Misa Matetich leads the team with six strikeouts in 6.0 innings pitched.
