Cougars Fall Twice

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MORRIS, Minn. – It wasn't the way the Cougars (22-11, 13-1 UMAC) wanted to wrap up the season but despite two losses on Saturday the Cougars are still Co-UMAC Volleyball Champions. In the first match of the day Northwestern handed the Cougars the 3-1 loss. Concordia-Moorhead then swept the Cougars ending the UMM regular season.

Minnesota Morris will still host a first round UMAC Semi-final on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. as Martin Luther will come to town. The Cougars will be the number two seed in the UMAC Tournament due to the tie breaker falling the way of the Eagles.

Northwestern took the first two sets from the Cougars, quickly gaining a hold of the match. The second set featured 12 ties and two lead changes but UMM could never get over the hump after falling behind 12-11. With the set tied at 20, Northwestern scored five straight take the set 25-20.

In set three Minnesota Morris rallied after trailing 10-6 to take a 13-10 lead after seven straight points. Northwestern pulled to within one at 17-16 before tying the set at 18. A 5-2 run gave UMM the 23-20 lead but UNW again rallied to tie the set a 24. An attack error and kill by Addie Vancura gave Morris the set three win.

Three errors by the Cougars to start the fourth set gave the Eagles the early lead. Morris took a 6-5 lead and the set remained close until Northwestern scored five straight and took a 15-10 lead. UMM never recovered and the Eagles took the set 25-15.

Emily Auch had 14 kills against UNW, leading the offense. Kaylie Clark had 35 digs defensively, keeping the Cougars in the match. Abby Tietz and Hannah Knott each had 10 kills against the Eagles. Mandy Allman had 24 assists.

The effects of having to play back to back matches got to the Cougars in their contest with Concordia. Auch again led the offense picking up 11 kills but it was not enough.

The Cobbers jumped out to a 7-3 lead early in the first set and kept UMM at bay for a majority of the set taking it 25-20.

It was all Concordia in the second set as UMM fell behind 10-4 in the early going. Morris could not get closer than five the rest of the set and fell 25-14.

Minnesota Morris battled hard in the third set and it was competitive throughout the set. Neither team had a lead larger than two early one. Morris tried to pull away, taking a 12-7 lead in the middle of the set but CC stayed strong and found a way to tie the set at 12. It was back and forth for the rest of the set but Concordia had the upper hand squeaking out the 25-23 set win.
