Cougars Split Spring Break Opener

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Cougars got in the win column on Monday as they picked up the 3-1 win in the first game of the double header with Clarion. Clarion got revenge in the second game picking up the 9-2 win. Morris will be back in action Wednesday against Rutgers-Camden.
 
GAME ONE
 
Minnesota Morris used three unearned runs in the bottom of the first inning to take a lead over Clarion. Jessica Gordon and Molly Olson reached on one out errors to start the rally. Kelsey Draper singled right field scoring Gordon from second. Jordan Iverson tripled to clear the bases putting UMM up 3-0.
 
Draper got the start and went four innings allowing three hits and one earned run. In the fourth inning Draper walked the leadoff hitter before picking up a pair of strikeouts. Clarion would end up loading the bases and scored thanks a wild pitch. Mackenzie Weatherly would come in to relieve Draper and pick up the save going three innings allowing three hits and striking out three. Clarion threated in the firth loading the bases with one out but Weatherly stuck out the next two batters to preserve the 3-1 lead. Weatherly would not allow another runner past second base the rest of the game.
 
GAME TWO
 
The Cougars took the lead in game two as well scoring a pair of runs in the second inning. Sam Hanson and Mandy Allman led off the inning with singles before Kristy Hoge walked to load the bases. A wild pitch allowed Hanson to score giving UMM the 1-0 lead. Kallie Grote bunted to plate Allman making it 2-0 heading to the bottom of the second.
 
Clarion got one back in the bottom of the inning and then took the lead with three runs in the bottom of the third. A bases loaded, two out single was the big hit of the inning as Clarion took the 4-2 lead on the hit. The Golden Eagles would add three more in the fourth and two in the sixth to take a commanding 9-2 lead, which the Cougars could not overcome.
