Late Inning Run Gives Cougars the Sweep

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 VADNAIS HEIGHTS, Minn. – The Cougars (8-10, 4-1 UMAC) continued their hot start to the UMAC season with a sweep over North Central (2-7, 0-3 UMAC). Minnesota Morris scored eight runs in the bottom of the first inning to kick off the double-header, as they went on to win 11-2 in five innings. In game two, Morris scored a run in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game before winning it 7-6 in the eighth.
 
GAME ONE
 
Brooke Decker started the bottom of the first with a single through the left side. After moving to second on a wild pitch, she came around to score on Jessica Gordon's bunt single. Molly Olson singled and then Kelsey Draper walked to load the bases up. Sam Hanson reached on fielder's choice that allowed Gordon to score as North Central committed an error trying to cut her down at the plate. Cassie Sowada singled to plate both Olson and Draper, making it 4-0 UMM. Mandy Allman and Kristy Hoge both picked up a RBI making it 6-0 before Decker singled up the middle to drive in Hoge and Alex Anderson making it 8-0.
 
Draper doubled to lead off the second and then scored on Sowada's single to center field to make it 9-0. The Rams got two runs back in the top of the fourth but Morris responded with two of their own in the bottom of the inning. Sowada reached via a hit-by-pitch and then Allman doubled to center, putting runners on second and third with one out. Hoge singled to center to score both Sowada and Allman making it 11-2, which would be the final score of the game.
 
GAME TWO

 
The Rams got out to an early lead in game two, scoring three runs in the top of the first on two hits. Just like game one of the double-header, Decker and Gordon singled to start the inning. They would come around to score as Olson reached on an error to cut the lead to one.
 
North Central got a run back but in the top of the second to double their lead. The Cougars scored an unearned run in the bottom of the third to draw within one at 4-3. Minnesota Morris would take the lead at 5-4 in the fifth thanks to two more unearned runs. Olson reached via a single up the middle and then Draper reached on an error to short with one out. After a strikeout, Allman came up and walked; during the walk Olson would score on a passed ball to tie the game. Hoge then singled, allowing Draper to score and the Cougars to take the lead.
 
The Rams came right back in the top of the sixth, taking advantage of a two out Morris error. After a scoreless bottom of the sixth, North Central took the lead in the top of the seventh with a one out homer to center. Draper led the bottom of the seventh off with a walk and then Jordan Iverson doubled to right as Draper scored to tie the game up. Two more singles would follow but each time the batters were cut down trying to extend their single to a double. Mackenzie Weatherly, who had come into relieve Draper in the third inning, struck out all three Rams batters in the eighth. Alex Anderson reached on a one out single to center. Anderson then stole second and scored on Decker's single up the middle.
 
Minnesota Morris will be back in action tomorrow night as they face Northwestern in a double-header starting at 9:30 p.m. at the Rosemount Dome. Morris has won seven of their last eight games.
