Box Score 2 VADNAIS HEIGHTS, Minn. – Playing late into the night the Cougars (10-12, 6-3 UMAC) were unable to overcome the St. Scholastica Saints (15-10, 8-2 UMAC) losing 14-2 and 4-1 on Saturday night. It was the first of three doubleheaders over the next three days for the Cougars. All games will be played indoors at the Vadnais Heights Dome.
GAME ONE
The Cougars threated in the top of the first after
Jessica Gordon walked and advanced to second on a ground out.
Sam Hanson singled through the right side but Gordon was thrown out at the plate to end the inning and the threat. St. Scholastica would take advantage of their threat in the bottom of the inning scoring one run on a single up the middle.
The Saints exploded for 11 runs in the bottom of the second to break the game open. They would hit a pair of grand slams in the inning to take the 12-0 lead. St. Scholastica would pick up a pair of runs in the bottom of the third to make it 14-0 after three. Minnesota Morris took advantage of back to back singles in the top of the fourth as both Hanson and
Kelsey Draper would reach. Hanson would come around to score on
Kristy Hoge's double to right center.
Rikki Beaver would pinch run for Draper and score on
Laura Lhotka's groundout to first.
There would be no more scoring in the game as Minnesota Morris fell 14-2 in the opener.
GAME TWO
St. Scholastica picked up a first run inning in game two to grab the early lead once again. Rendi Johnson hit her third homer of the doubleheader to put the Saints up 1-0 after one. The Cougars threatened in the third but came up short and the Saints took advantage, scoring a run in the bottom half of the inning to double their lead. The Saints added another one in the bottom of the fourth, scoring on a close play at the plate.
Minnesota Morris got a leadoff single from pinch hitter
Cassie Sowada as they tried to rally back in the game.
Alex Anderson re-entered and found her way to third thanks to a wild pitch and a groundout.
Molly Olson drew a walk before Hanson delivered with a single to right, scoring Anderson. Draper hit a hard liner right at the second baseman to end the inning. St. Scholastica would get that run back in the bottom of the sixth to push their lead back to three going into the seventh. It was all the Cougars could muster as they went down quietly in the top of the seventh.
The Cougars will now play Northland at 4 p.m. tomorrow afternoon.
